Emhane's Blog

Just another WordPress.com site

So, I like to follow the adage of “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

I also like to follow the adage of “if your life isn’t wildly interesting and you’re not going to take the time to make your blog witty and wonderful, you shouldn’t have a blog.”

The second semester at school definitely went smoother than the first semester. Hot season was hot. But, on the upside, just passing out and taking naps anywhere is completely socially acceptable. The rain has started, meaning it has rained once. We’re all hoping that it’ll rain more soon.

As for the moment, I don’t have any huge plans for the summer. Though, I’m really excited about next school year. I’m glad I will get a “take two” to fix a lot of the mistakes that I’ve made this past year.

I’ve been working at the radio, which is a lot of fun. We have our bilingualism emission every Thursday afternoon (but, usually, we prerecord it) and they let me read children’s stories in English very slowly to broadcast over the radio. People like that sort of thing. I’ll continue doing that over the summer. I will also hopefully do a session or two of adult English classes. Finally, I want to completely reorganize our library and make it actually usable for students. My big goal for next year is to get students reading and writing fiction.

I’ll also be spending some time down in Bafia helping train the new volunteers. It is weird to think that a year has gone by. It’s also very sad to say goodbye to all of the parting volunteers, but I’m equally stoked to meet the new ones.

Finally: I have figured out the perfect way to describe Cameroon. It is exactly like a carnival. All of the food is fried, and you can buy almost anything on a stick. (Well, mostly just meat on a stick. So tasty!) The public transportation is much like a terrifying carnival ride. You think it’s going to be fun, but in the end there are no seat belts and you have a bit of a headache. All regional capitals have soft serve machines on every other corner. There are children everywhere. Everyone has a stall selling goods that you probably don’t need, but definitely want. They heckle you, you heckle back. You spend a lot of time just standing around, waiting in lines, or sometimes just standing around wondering what it is that you’re going to eat next. There is definitely that glitzy charm, though everything is rusted, broken, and dilapidated. At the end of the day, you’ve had a good time, but your tummy kinda hurts.

That’s pretty much my life.
